Viking brooch

The design of this brooch dates from the Viking era and it is purely Finnish. The main motif is St John’s Arms, a symbol that was believed to ward off evil. Four inward-facing animal heads decorate the rim. Dozens of similar brooches have been found in western Finland, which indicates the popularity of the design.

This Viking brooch (no. 7) was part of Kalevala Jewelry’s first ever collection in 1937. Many decades later, it won the ‘Most Sought-after Classics’ vote and was reintroduced into the new 2017 collection.
