Kuusamo Ax

The prototype for this piece, a large pendant in the shape of an ax blade, is part of a treasure trove that was found in the village of Lämsä in Kuusamo in Northern Finland. The original silver pendant dates from the northern crusade (2050–1150 A.D.), a turbulent, yet prosperous era. Valuables were often buried for safekeeping during this period. The stamped ornamentation indicates Karelian origin.
